The Real Reason Why You Hate Being An Attorney
Okay maybe “hate the law” is a little strong for you. Maybe you’re just bored being an attorney. Or maybe you’ve had a good run as an attorney and you’re ready now for your second act. Or maybe you do hate the law. Maybe you’re just miserable and anxious as an attorney.
I’m Casey Berman founder of Leave Law Behind and I’m shooting this video from my backyard because I think a lot of us who are in the Leave Law Behind community or who are looking to leave law or just not feeling “it”, we wonder why we hate the law. We wonder why we hate being an attorney. Or why we’re bored with it. Or why it’s just not a great fit for us.
The Usual Suspects
Why we’re feeling something is left on the table. We’re feeling unfulfilled and there’s a lot of what I call are the “usual suspects”.
It’s I don’t like the people I work with.
It’s a horrible client.
It’s just the 24/7.
It’s I don’t have any time on my own.
I can’t see my family.
I haven’t gone to the gym.
Billable hours.
I hate that I’m working more than 2,000 hours.
The real reason you hate being an attorney
You know on and on and on. And those are real reasons to not like the profession, to not like your job day in and day out. But I think there is a real core reason that we’re missing, that is often unreported and that is … you ready?: Your skills and strengths as a person, not just an attorney, your skills and strengths, what you are good at, are not the best fit for the job description of an attorney.
There’s a mismatch.
There’s a disconnect.
And let’s put it this way: Your skills and strengths are a better fit in another job that’s right the job description of an attorney is not a fit with really how you bring value, what you’re good at, what you’re confident at.
Okay, I want that to really sink in because we can talk about the “usual suspects” all we want, we can talk about, them all day, but they’re external from us. You’re never going make that schmuck of a partner into a nice guy or a nice person. It just may not happen, and if it does great but you can’t count on it. What we can control is how we react to things and how I want you to react is to understand that it’s not your fault, you haven’t done anything wrong.
What’s going on here is your skills and strengths – what you’re good at, how you bring value, how you help people, how you help the world – it’s really just not that much of a fit with the job description of an attorney.
Now you’ve been able to make it. Maybe there are parts of it that worked well for you. You’ve been able to make money. Maybe you’ve been able to fake it. Maybe you have that impostor syndrome.
But what I really want to do is to give you hope and for you to realize that it’s not your fault. I don’t want you to feel anxious. I don’t want you to feel like you’ve done something wrong. What I want you to realize is you don’t need to remain in a job that you don’t like and really you may not be that good at it.
Maybe you’re pretty good at it … maybe you’re twenty percent “good”, thirty percent “good”, fifty percent “good”, seventy percent “good”. But I want you to find a job where you’re 80 percent aligned, ninety percent aligned, ninety-nine percent aligned. It can happen.
Now here’s what I want you to do: I want you to take a small step.
